In 1981, the Marciano brothers, originally from the South of France, made Los Angeles their home after falling in love with the city. Inspired by a billboard slogan they saw daily, they named their brand “GUESS.”
Their breakthrough product, the Marilyn Jean, a slim-fitting, stonewashed ankle jean, defied American market norms. Bloomingdale’s ordered 24 pairs, which sold out within hours. GUESS quickly gained recognition, making its way into major department stores and reclaiming denim as a fashionable item with innovative cuts and washes.
